I’m not a very good dancer. In fact, there have been many people who have told me my dance moves are similar to those of the Seinfeld character, Elaine Benes. While this has been a trait that I possess (which I like to use in my self deprecation arsenal), I’ve learned to embrace the fact that I’m no Ginger Rogers. However, there is one dance move that I’ve mastered, The Twist.
If you’ve ever seen a high school movie set in the 1950s or even the scene from Pulp Fiction, when Uma Thurman and John Travolta dance to “C’est La Vie,” then you’ve probably seen The Twist. It’s a fairly easy move to execute and was sweeping the nation 60 years ago. Call me old fashioned, but I don’t get how people dance today. I mean, sure, The Twist is a bit hokey, but shall I say, much more dignified than ‘The Jersey Turnpike’?
Whether it’s ‘The Mashed Potato’ or traditional swing moves, The Twist is one of the most entertaining dances. I’m sure if there ever is a comeback, Chubby Checker would be proud.
